An interesting Germanic imitation
Lot 1934
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.47 g, 7 h), uncertain mint, after 507. D N ANASTASIVS P P AVG Pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Anastasius I facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and with a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing a fallen foe, over his left shoulder. Rev. VICTORI-A AVGGG A / CONOB Victory standing front, head to left, holding long jeweled cross in her right hand; in field to right, star. Cf. DOC 3a, MIB 4a and SB 3 (for prototype). Lustrous and perfectly struck. Virtually as struck.

The barbed spear-head and somewhat clumsy style of this coin are reminiscent of Ostrogothic solidi from Rome, but the use of P P instead of P F on the obverse as well as the irregular cross and the lack of ground line on the reverse point towards a different Germanic origin
